چکیده

An ion beam propagating through a magnetized plasma cylinder containing electrons, light positive potassium ions K+ , and heavy positive cesium ions Cs+ drives electrostatic ion cyclotron EIC waves to instability via Cerenkov interaction. Two EIC wave modes are present, the K+ and Cs+ modes. The unstable wave frequencies and the growth rate of both the light positive ion and heavy positive ion modes increase with an increase in their relative ion concentrations. The growth rate of both the unstable modes K+ and Cs+ scales one-third power of the beam density. The real part of the frequency of both the unstable modes K+ and Cs+ increases with the beam energy and scales as almost one-half power of the beam energy. Numerical calculations of the growth rate and mode frequencies have been carried out for the parameters of the experiment of Suszcynsky et al. J. Geophys. Res. 94, 8966 1989 . It is found that the unstable wave frequencies of both the light positive ion and heavy positive ion modes increase with the magnetic fields in accordance with the experimental observations. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3522876

An Experimental Study of Electrostatic Ion Cyclotron Waves in a TwoIon Component Plasma

Two-ion component electrostatic ion cyclotron (EIC) waves are studied in a single-ended Q-machine containing variable concentrations of Cs + and K + ions. Measurements of the excitation and propagation characteristics of the waves are presented and compared with available theories. The waves are internally excited by drawing an electron current along the magnetic field to an 11-mm exciter disk....

Amplification of electrostatic ion-cyclotron waves in a plasma with magnetic-field-aligned ion flow shear and no electron current

Experimental demonstration of the amplification of electrostatic ion-cyclotron waves in a plasma with parallel ion flow shear but no magnetic-field-aligned electron current is presented. Waves with frequencies near the ion gyrofrequency and multiple harmonics launched from an antenna are observed to grow in amplitude in a region of ion flow shear. Amplification of multiple cyclotron harmonics w...

Electrostatic Ion - Cyclotron Waves in a Two - Ion Component Plasma

The excitation of electrostatic ion-cyclotron (EIC) waves is studied in a single-ended Q machine in a two-ion-component plasma (Cs+ and K+). Over a large range of relative concentrations of Cs+ and K+ ions, two modes are excited with frequencies w , z Q,,, and w2 t QK+, where the Q's are the respective cyclotron frequencies. The results are discussed in terms of a fluid theory of electrostatic ...

Excitation and Propagation of Electrostatic Ion Cyclotron Waves in rf-Sustained Plasmas of Interest to Propulsion Research

Excitation and propagation of Electrostatic Ion Cyclotron (EIC) waves in an rf-sustained argon plasma are reported along with measurement of dispersion relation. Such waves can be used to energize the plasmas of a number of promising propulsion concepts. The waves are excited by an antenna consisting of two parallel metal plates inserted at the edge of a plasma column with their surface normal ...

Coronal ion-cyclotron beam instabilities within the multi-fluid description

Context. Spectroscopic observations and theoretical models suggest resonant wave-particle interactions, involving high-frequency ion-cyclotron waves, as the principal mechanism for heating and accelerating ions in the open coronal holes. However, the mechanism responsible for the generation of the ion-cyclotron waves remains unclear. One possible scenario is that ion beams originating from smal...
